Exploring the Mountain Tomb

Godsday the 18th of Planting, Common Year 589

The group of intrepid adventurers went back to the Temple of Heironeous in order to allow Naimi to recover from the spider bite. Once Naimi was healed, the push into the forest continued!

Wary of the spiders, Rain made an effort to search out their webs in hope of finding cocoons of adventurers carry treasure or magic to their dooms. Rain spotted a cocoon and retrieved it from a web high in a tree. Unfortunately, Rain alerted the spider to her presence and was bitten but not poisoned. The party killed the spider and tore open the cocoon only to find a dead squirrel.

Upon reaching the end of the forest path, the party came upon an archway leading into a mountain. On either side of the arch was a statue that was damaged and desecrated. Sarison detected an enchantment beyond the archway and Schmidt tried to activate it by tossing the squirrel into the passage. That had no effect so Rain attempted to disable the device. The attempt was unsuccessful and the glyph of warding triggered, much to Rain's dismay.

The commotion in the passageway alerted a group of nearby skeletons and caused them to attack. Sarison tangled the skeletons using a web spell and the undead creatures were overcome. The battle, however, was fierce and the party was forced to retreat to the temple of Heironeous in order to tend to their many wounds.

On Freeday, 21st of Planting, the party traveled back into the mountain passage finding two destroyed basins that once held holy water, a room in which someone lived many years ago, and a large fountain that spurted blood! Worse yet, skeletons rose from the fountain and attacked the party as they explored the area. Another heated battle took place and after the skeletons were defeated, yet another group of them rose from the fountain! The party beat a hasty retreat to the temple and rested for another two days before traveling back to Fairhill to enlist the aid of Kath, a priest of Kord.

On the 27th of Planting, the reinforced party made another push into the mountain passage. Kath identified the place as a holy tomb where the faithful priests of Heironeous and Mayaheine were laid to rest. The tomb had been defiled and bore many markings of the demon god Orcus! Upon entering the room with the blood fountain, four more skeletons rose to attack the party. Another pitched battle was joined with the party emerging victorious. However, there was no time to savor their good fortune for as the last skeleton fell, the party heard splashing coming from the fountain!

Into the Shrine of Mayaheine

Godsday the 18th of Planting, Common Year 589

After a thorough investigation of the Shrine of Heironeous, the party moved on to investigate the next shrine, the Shrine of Mayaheine. Once their investigation was complete, the party set off to the northwest. With Rain leading the way, the party discovered a path into the forest. Before they could follow the path, 5 giant spiders descended from nearby trees. With Sarison casting spells and the rest of the party using swords and bows, the spiders were quickly dispatched. Alas, poor Naimi was bitten and poisoned!

Into the Shrine of Heironeous

Godsday the 18th of Planting, Common Year 589

The party woke early and continued their investigation of the valley. In short order a set of stairs was found carved into the hillside. Following the stairs, the adventurers came upon a plateau where sat two shrines next to a cloudy lake. The shrines were in disrepair and when the party entered the first of the two, they found it to be a defiled shrine to Heironeous. A search of the blood and feces covered shrine revealed holy writing on the base of the statue of Heironeous.

Naimi insisted that the party cleanse the shrine so the group went to the lake to get water. While filling their water skins, the group thought they heard something moving through the lake. Instead of investigating the noise, the party returned to the shrine and began to clean it. With Schmidt keeping watch, the party cleaned the blood, feces, and evil writing from the statue of Heironeous.

Things took a turn for the worse when Schmidt sounded the alarm. Someone was approaching the shrine! The party hid behind the base of the shadow and watched as a band of ten skeleton warriors entered the shrine. Before the skeletons could act, Sarison cast a web on them and the party methodically smashed the skeletal warriors to pieces.

Once the battle was finished, Rain and Naimi went to work on deciphering the meaning of the writings on the base of the statue. With a bit of effort the two were able to determine the phrase to utter to cause the statue to move and a stairway to a lower level was revealed. Naimi descended but was immediately injured by a glyph of warding. Rain and Sarison determined that there were two other glyphs in the shrine and steered clear of them.

The stairs ended in a study filled with religious tomes. Rain searched the room and found secret doors on the east, west and north walls. The rooms behind the secret doors were filled with more religious tomes, divine scrolls, holy symbols, twenty vials of holy water, an enchanted light mace, an enchanted chain formed from black metal, and five potions of cure light wounds. Taking what they needed, the party went back up the stairs and caused the statue to move back to its original position covering the secret entrance to the lower level of the shrine.

Beware the Owlbear

Moonday the 17th of Planting, Common Year 589

The day started with the party shopping for supplies after the celebration held in honor of them dispatching the manticores near Fairhill. Iron rations were purchased and Evro Schmidt, the hired fighting man, was outfitted for further adventure.

The group decided to follow a map that Sarison found tucked between the pages of a spell book recovered from an abandoned keep. The trip would take the adventurers deep into the mountains so they had to make arrangements for the long journey. Nirden, a Fairhill resident was hired at the sum of 1 silver coin per day to manage the party's farm and care for their horse. With the last details taken care of, Sarison, Rain, Naimi, and Schmidt set off for the foothills.

On the first day out of town, the party ran across three goblins traveling in the opposite direction. Being that the adventurers are a stealthy lot, they were able to hide in the brush and let the goblins pass without incident.

Another two days went by quietly and the party soon found itself in the cooler clime of the higher elevation. Rounding a corner of a mountain pass, the party was surprised to run smack into an owlbear. Sarison managed to slow the creature by casting a web about it as the rest of the party readied for the coming attack. The owlbear broke free and charged Schmidt who engaged the beast in hand to hand combat as the others fanned out and shot at it with their bows. Sarison contributed arcane missle fire before casting blink on himself and moving in with his staff at the ready. The owlbear was powerful and eventually overcame Schmidt and moved to attack rain. Naimi drew her mystical blade and moved in as both Rain and Sarison were injured. The combined efforts of the party won the day and afterward Naimi tended to the wounds of the others.

The wounds that Schmidt suffered were so grievous that the party had to camp for three days. Shelter was not a problem as Sarison found the owlbear's cave and Rain and Naimi helped him block the entrance with rocks. A few days worth of rations were saved as the party decided to dine on owlbear meat. It was quite delicious.

Once all party members were back on their feet, the journey continued. It took just another day to reach the valley shown on the map. After some searching, Naimi was able to find the path, now quite overgrown, indicated by the map. The sun was setting however, and the party was forced to camp rather than continue their journey.
